Historic Buildings Project Officer

Required for Lancaster.

Salary Range £33,732 - £39,047

An opportunity has arisen in our busy OA office in Lancaster. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate experience in historic buildings survey and cultural heritage/heritage management reporting.

The role requires you to have competency in building survey skills (including laser scanning, photogrammetry and total station survey, GIS and/or AutoCAD). You will be able to produce building survey reports to Historic England Level 1-3 survey standards, demonstrating a strong understanding of the architectural history and building types of northern England, research skills, and a good command of written English. You will also be required to undertake and report upon watching briefs/archaeological investigations of historic buildings. You will need to produce WSIs, RAMs and archives for buildings projects. 

Depending on your experience, the role will also require the production of heritage management reports such as desk-based assessments, setting studies and heritage impact assessments for buildings and archaeological sites. This could include the production of Statements of Significance and impact assessments in accordance with Historic England guidance. Further training will be provided, as required.

A willingness and aptitude to contribute to upland landscape survey projects would also be advantageous.

You will have a good understanding, and experience of, professional archaeological fieldwork within the UK or Irish commercial environment as well as of the Health and Safety legislation relevant to it. 

Position requirements:

  • Thorough general knowledge and understanding of British archaeology, and the principles, practices, procedures and processes relevant to archaeological investigations.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of historic buildings archaeology, architectural history and the full range of procedures, practices and processes for both on and off site investigations.
  • Ability to collect, process, store and archive all types of buildings archaeology data in the required format, and ensure its accuracy and relevance.
  • Preparation of tenders, WSIs and Risk Assessments for historic buildings investigations.
  • Ability to conduct non-intrusive archaeological and cultural heritage management investigations, assessments and reporting, including desk based assessments, Statements of Significance, impact assessments and mitigation recommendations.
  • Contribute to historic landscape surveys and reporting.
  • Ability to operate independently, make decisions and solve problems when required and appropriate, but also to operate as part of a larger team and contribute to multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Provide staff training and development programmes as required.
  • This post involves driving to sites throughout the country and a full clean driving licence and willingness to drive for work is essential.
  • A degree in archaeology or related discipline will be highly advantageous, and CIfA membership at an appropriate level.

  • Subsistence payment of £22.50 per night (tax free) and free, no sharing in single rooms (usually B & B or self-catering) for away-based projects.
  • Paid travel time for journeys to site that take longer than one hour from the office and free transport from regional offices to sites.
