We know that a Coffee house and the George and Dragon pub stood on the site in the 19th century as they appear on maps and Census returns of that date, but before that we have to rely on what we find in the ground for information. Recent finds include an 18th century ceramic beer tankard pictured here just after it was unearthed from a rubbish pit close to the site of the George and Dragon. Other finds from the same pit include a coffee cup, clay tobacco pipes, a large jar and chamber pots – more on those later. So it looks like the pub and the coffee house both date back to the 18th century.
