OA East is based in Cambridge and operates across the East of England from the Thames to the Humber, and elsewhere in conjunction with our partners in other parts of the company. It has operated since the 1980s, previously as a local authority in-house contractor and since 2008 as part of Oxford Archaeology. OA East has around 60 staff working on a wide range of commercial programmes.

At OA East we pride ourselves on our reputation for extensive and often ground-breaking education and outreach programmes. Currently these include the Cambridgeshire JIGSAW project, delivered through support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. This is providing two dedicated outreach staff to support community archaeology in Cambridgeshire over five years. In addition we share a further programme of outreach events through the operation of Cambridgeshire Archaeology, jointly with Cambridgeshire County Council. We continue to deliver many other outreach initiatives with schools in both the state and independent sectors and with local societies and groups across the Eastern region. We have also been producing high quality displays and presentation materials for many years, both in support of outreach and commercial projects, and as separate commissions.

In common with the rest of the company, OA East has a longstanding commitment to academic publication of its commercial projects and has also been engaged by English Heritage and others in a range of synthetic research projects. We publish monographs based on both individual sites and as syntheses of data, through two series; East Anglian Archaeology and OA monographs, and our staff regularly author academic papers for a variety of periodicals.
